Programs in Illustration

What is Illustration?

A degree in illustration focuses on the art of visualizations (a drawing, painting, photograph or other work of art)and their importance in highlighting prominent points or moments in various stories, poem or articles. The purpose of the illustration is typically to enhance the writing by providing a visual representation, and can clarify complicated concepts or objects that are difficult to describe textually.

Illustrations have been used in advertisements, greeting cards, posters, books, magazines and newspapers. A cartoon illustration can add humor to humorous essays. Furthermore, computers have changed the industry and today many cartoonists and illustrators create digital illustrations using computers, graphics tablets, and scanners. Software such as Adobe Illustrator or Adobe Photoshop are now widely used by those professionals.

Students enrolled within an illustration degree program gain a solid educational background complete with information regarding studio art, liberal arts, business, technology, and communications. Most illustrators are required to complete a formal Bachelor’s or Master’s degree within the discipline of fine arts to qualify for employment. Some students complete associate’s degrees as the first step of their education in the field of illustration.

A typical undergraduate curriculum in illustration includes a wide array of classes, but most focus mainly on the craft such as drawing techniques; figure drawing; photography and imaging in digital media perspective; or the message such as color theory; analysis of form; written communications; art history and appreciation for example. The undergraduate degree typically takes at least 3 years to complete, but can take longer for those pursuing advanced levels of study.
