Programs in Game Production
Game production involves the process of overseeing the development of a video game. Game producers manage creative artists and software developers, and there are many that are deemed producers within the industry as to fit the needs of the company or business.
What is Game Production?
Most video and computer games are developed by third-party developers. In these cases, there may be external and internal producers. External producers may act as “executive producers” and are employed by the game’s publisher. Internal producers work for the developer itself and have more of a hands-on role.
For an external producer, their job responsibilities may focus mainly on overseeing several projects being worked on by a number of developers, and keep the upper management of the publisher informed as to the status and of any issues. If a publisher’s producer is overseeing a game being developed internally, their role is more akin to that of an internal producer and will generally only work on one game or a few small games.
Students enrolled in a Game Production program will learn a variety of business and communication skills necessary to run daily operations. Graduates will gain an understanding as to the process and apply theory successfully in the production of games, culminating in a stellar digital portfolio. Upon completion of the program, students should be able to create, manipulate, and integrate 2D and 3D assets as well as apply game play theory to the analysis and resolution of design challenges and problems. A wide range of degrees are available in this field ranging from undergraduate to graduate level studies, taking one to several years to complete.
