What is Game Art & Design?
A Game Art & Design degree is a specialized area of study within the field of game development, and specifically focuses on the process of creating 2D and 3D game art for a video game. Graduates from this type of program will usually be employed as game artists, who are visual artists that create video game art, such as concept art, item sprites, character models, and much more.
A Game Art & Design program will usually have a curriculum consisting of traditional and digital art fundamentals such as drawing, color, design, and computer applications will give you the background you need to start learning the techniques of animation, storyboarding, 2D and 3D modeling, lighting effects, and texture mapping. And you’ll also learn how to apply the principles of gaming, balance and usability to plan and devise game rules and mechanics; create the entire gaming experience; and develop games that can be used in industry-standard engines through every stage of the production pipeline.
A Game Art & Design program allows students to hone their skills to be employed in a very specific capacity. Graduates my find work as concept artists, for example, working with the game designers, producing character and environment sketches and story-board and influencing the look of the game. Other professions available to those with the degree include sprite artists, texture artists, map artists, environmental artists, and much more. The degree is typically offered as either an Associate’s or Bachelor’s level program taking 1 to 3 years to complete respectively.
